Munshiganj trawler capsize: Juba League, Chhatra League leaders sued

A case has been filed against a Juba League leader and a Chhatra League leader in connection with trawler capsize in the branch of the Padma River in Munshiganj on Saturday, leaving eight people killed and several others missing.

The accused are- Sirajdikhan upazila unit Juba League convening committee member Zahid Shikder, owner of the bulkhead, and former general secretary of upazila Chhatra League Parvez Chokder Pappu.

The trawler with 46 passengers on board sank in the tributary of the Padma River after being hit by a bulkhead.

The trawler with its passengers went to Sirajdikhan for a picnic and the ill-fated victims met the tragic accident while returning to Munshiganj. Some 36 people among the 46 passengers managed to swim ashore while the divers managed to pull out eight bodies and two people remained missing.

Rubel Sheikh, one of the victims who lost his family during the incident, filed a written compliant with the Louhajong Police Station on Sunday six people including Zahid Shikder, Parvez Chokder Pappu. Later, after investigating the compliant police recorded it as a case.

According the case documents, the trawler sank after a reckless and speedy bulkhead carrying sand collided with it around 8pm on Saturday (August 5). In the incident, Rubel lost his wife, child and his brother, sister.

Officer-in-Charge of Khandkar Imam Hosen of Louhajong Police Station said marine police will investigate the matter.

Mawa Marine police outpost In-Charge (SI) Khandakar Khalid Hossin said they continuing drive to nab the driver and sukani (crew member) of the bulkhead.
